Initialize Factory-Fresh Devices
A device marked Needs Setup has no admin password and will not do anything useful until it has one. Setting that password is initialization, and Scout does it one device at a time or across every uninitialized device at once.
Initialize one device
- Tap a device marked Needs Setup.
- Tap Initialize.
- Enter the admin password you intend to use for this site. The requirement list updates as you type, and the button stays disabled until every rule is met.
- Tap Initialize and wait. The device reboots some models at the end.
Behind that one tap Scout asks the device what its password rules are, negotiates encryption with it, and sends the new credentials encrypted with AES-128. The password is never sent in the clear.
Password rules
Scout asks each device for its own rules and shows those. Most IC Realtime devices want:
- 8 to 32 characters
- At least two character types from upper case, lower case, digits and symbols
Some models do not report their rules at all. The IPMX-E40F-IRW2, for example, returns nothing when asked, and Scout falls back to the 8-to-32 and two-character-type standard above. That fallback is deliberate and safe; it is stricter than the device requires, not looser.
Initialize many at once
On a new install you will usually have a box of identical cameras. Bulk init sets the same admin password on all of them in one pass.
- From the device list, choose Bulk Initialize.
- Review the list. Only uninitialized devices appear.
- Enter the password once.
- Start, and watch each row report success or failure independently. One failure does not stop the rest.
Choose the password deliberately
The password you set here goes into the deployment manifest and is what the customer or the monitoring platform will use later. Decide it before you start, write it down in your own system, and use the same one across the site unless the customer has asked otherwise.
If a device fails to initialize, see Troubleshooting.
